Top-5-Halloween-Baddies-Geeks-Gamers

Everyone have a wonderful Halloween! In celebration of all the spooks, frights, and candy consumption, I thought I’d share my top five favorite horror movie villains with you. They’re all here, and yes, they’re in order!

*SPOILERS*

Norman Bates is number five.

Top 5 Halloween Baddies

Psycho, based on a book of the same name, was produced in 1960. It was the first film in the horror genre to introduce the “slasher” sub-genre, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The main character Norman Bates’ uneasy skulking about the fleabag hotel he operates with his mother makes you sympathize with him. That changes, though, when he gets fascinated with Marion Crane, their new visitor. When she enters the scene, things get truly eerie, and we get to witness the true Norman Bates emerge. The film is a timeless masterpiece. The ridiculous narrative surprise in the end, when we learn Norman Bates’ mother has been dead for years and he’s been dressing up as her out of a VERY unhealthy obsession? ICONIC. I get the heebie-jeebies just thinking about this movie and how twisted Bates is. Fun fact: Norman Bates is modeled on real-life serial murderer Ed Gein, who, among other things, had a tumultuous relationship with his mother, which just adds to the creepiness. He’s the kind of guy you may run across in your daily life.

Michael Myers is number four.

Top 5 Halloween Baddies

I believe this one speaks for itself, but let’s get started. The myth of The Boogeyman terrified us all as children, and Michael Myers is unquestionably the current personification of him. He’s hiding in the shadows, and by the time you see him, it’s too late; RIP. The blank gaze on his mask, along with the sluggish, deliberate manner he walks about, has persuaded us all that there isn’t a real person behind it, and we could be right. Myers is the most well-known Halloween villain. When people are asked about horror icons, he’s the first one that comes to mind. People will be dressing up like him throughout the month of October, not just on Halloween. Myers is the personification of Halloween. He’s one of my favorites just because he’s so straightforward. There are no gimmicks, special abilities, or anything like that. He’s simply there, lurking in the shadows, ready to stab someone for no apparent reason other than to do so, and that’s what makes him so terrible.

Freddy Krueger is number three on the list.

Top 5 Halloween Baddies

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes I just argued that Michael Myers is wonderful because he’s a villain without gimmicks or special abilities, and now I’m bringing up Freddy Krueger. Hear me out: I think Freddy Krueger is a physical manifestation of sleep paralysis, and that is why he terrifies me. Is it possible that I’m suffering from sleep paralysis? No. But, if there were a tangible picture of what it would be like, I suppose Krueger would be it. Sleep paralysis is a genuine phenomenon, and the concept of waking up terrified out of your mind and unable to move or talk does not appeal to me in the least. That concept has now spawned a whole film franchise! Yay! Add in a villain that has the ability to enter your dreams and murder you there and then? Thank you, but no. Please keep him as far away from me as possible.

Leatherface No. 2

Top 5 Halloween Baddies

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a great horror film that I have only watched once and will probably never see again (1974). That movie bothered me so much that I stayed on my sofa for hours after the credits had ended, looking at the screen. It’s that excellent, and the greatest part is that it’s completely free. Because there isn’t much music in the movie, your ears will be particularly tuned in to the victims’ cries, “The Family’s” insane laughing, and the notorious chainsaw roar. The latter is so loud that I had to cover my ears a few times. Leatherface, of course, is the villain wielding the chainsaw. Leatherface is a horror symbol based on Ed Gein, a real-life nasty man. Rather of emphasizing on his bond with his mother, they emphasize on the fact that he donned suits made of human flesh this time. (I’m serious; do some research on this person.) Leatherface isn’t named that because he wears leather; rather, it’s because his mask is constructed of leathered human flesh, as we all know. Wonderful. Leatherface doesn’t say anything in the film; he only swings his chainsaw around and moans sometimes. What concerns me the most about him is that there is no way out; his family controls this whole little town in Texas, and just when you think you have a chance, you are handed over to him again. Because of this film, I believe many people have a latent phobia of little, run-down villages in the middle of nowhere. I’m certain Leatherface and his family are the reason I’ll never go through one on a road trip. I’ll be traumatized for the rest of my life.

1. Jigsaw

Top 5 Halloween Baddies

I understand that the Saw films have a lot of detractors, but its villain is one of the best of all time, and here’s why:

He’s a realist to the core.

It’s right, you read that correctly. Jigsaw, a.k.a. John Kramer, is one of, if not THE most, realistic horror villains of all time. Many of the traps he employs, for example, were really used during the Spanish Inquisition. Other traps are customized torture devices that were formerly utilized all throughout the globe. You feel sad for him and what he’s been through, even though he’s sick and twisted. His motivations are also understandable. “Why do terrible things happen to good people and wonderful things happen to evil people?” we’ve all wondered. We’ve all taken our lives for granted, focusing on what we don’t have rather than appreciating what we have. Jigsaw takes that notion a step further by forcing you to battle for your life. This results in an intriguing and unique perspective on what might have been a standard horror villain. I remember thinking to myself the first time I saw these movies that I would be the sort of person he would choose for one of his games. Jigsaw will always be number one in my book because, in addition to the horrors and gore, he makes you think.

That’s all there is to it. That concludes my list of my top five favorite horror villains! Let me know what yours are in the comments section below! I wish you everyone a happy and safe Halloween!
