I’ve been thinking about writing another blog post about this topic. For a while, I kept seeing a lot of series that I thought had low “stickiness” and seemed to lose a lot of interest. I decided to do some research to see what I could come up with and I found a few interesting trends.
This is going to be a short one today. I thought I would do a series on series that have lost the most interest over time. I will stick to series that I have played through and I will be using the first episode as the average. I will also stick to 3 and 4 episode series. These are not my favorite series and I will not be including any series I have played through.
MCU, Star Wars, Call of Duty, Game of Thrones…. The most popular amusement machines in the world today are also among the biggest franchises, attracting millions (if not billions) of loyal fans. But all good things run the risk of not staying good forever – read on to find out which franchises and series have peaked and which are still going strong. For the Fandom Abandon study, we looked at the biggest movie franchises, video game series, and television shows, analyzed their IMDB and Metacritic ratings, and recorded them to show how they have changed over time.
Video games
While there are always new flagships in the video game world, the best-selling games on all platforms tend to come from well-known franchises like Pokémon, Call of Duty, and GTA. To find out which ones are still at the top and which ones have long lost their place, we analyzed the Metacritic ratings over time.

Need for Speed -30% Peak : 89% Hot Chase 2 (2002) Lowest : 59% Undercover (2008) Actual: 72% Heat (2019) The Tony Hawk video game series had its heyday in the early 2000s, but ratings plummeted when the developers released the interactive skateboarding game Ride in 2009. Fallout and Metal Gear Solid showed the biggest drop in quality in their final installments, both of which experimented with style and gameplay changes.
Films
The highest-grossing movies of the year tend to follow the same pattern as video games: Sequels, remakes, prequels and crossovers become the biggest blockbusters every year. Do these billion dollar franchises get better over time, or do the movie moguls have a vested interest in capitalizing on their head start?

Magic World -16% Peak : 8.1 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows : Volume 2 (2011) The Bottom Line: 6.5 Fantastic Animals: The Crimes of Grindewald (2018). The X-Men franchise has long been criticized for its fragmented and confusing timeline, something the Avengers films have done much better. The last part of The New Mutants was criticized for being predictable and boring. Logan, on the other hand, was widely hailed as the Wolverine movie that all fans were waiting for. In general, fans seem to either hate or love the X-Men movies, with the last two volumes receiving the worst feedbacks since the first film was released in 2000.

We live in a golden age of quality television, with thousands of series available and dedicated fan bases celebrating the successes of those series each season and condemning the failures.

The lowest rating on IMDB for the first season is a 7.7 for the eighth episode, while all other episodes score between 8.2 and 9.1 – not many programs can boast that. I enjoyed the next 4 seasons, but ratings plummeted in the final season when Kevin Spacey’s character, Frank Underwood, left the show. The criticism focuses on the lack of direction, plot and imagination.

Whether it’s a game, series, or even an entire genre of games, there are some that are more popular than others. So, which ones did we think were more popular than others? We took a look at the most played games on Steam over the last 7 days, and then saw which ones had the most active users on Steam in the same timeframe. Most active games will always be popular, but how long are they popular for? The many series that are seen today compared to their first year can really make a difference. One of these is the Iron Man series, which once upon a time had a huge following and now it is rarely seen. It was also one of the first superhero comics, which was a major change in the comic industry.
