Movies
It’s no secret that the latest Disney Star Wars films have received a lot of negative press. Long-time fans have protested Kathleen Kennedy, JJ Abrams, and Rian Johnson’s handling of the situation over the past six years, while younger fans have expressed their approval. The fan divide has been a major issue, generating worldwide headlines. Reporters have taken sides, Lucasfilm has insulted its devoted fan base of 40 years for not like their new path, social media accounts have been suspended; the fight to respect Star Wars has been a long and exhausting one.
That divide was rekindled two days ago with the publication of Howard Kazanjian: A Producer’s Life, a book authored by late author and Star Wars historian J.W. Rinzler. In that book, it was discovered that award-winning film editor Marcia Lucas had some harsh words for Kathleen Kennedy, JJ Abrahams, and the whole sequel trilogy:
“…Now that Kathy Kennedy is controlling Lucasfilm and producing movies, it seems to me that she and J.J. Abrams are clueless about ‘Star Wars.’ They haven’t grasped the concept. And J.J. Abrams is creating these tales – I was angry when I watched the movie where Han Solo was killed. When they assassinated Han Solo, I was enraged. There was absolutely no rhyme or sense to any of it. ‘You don’t understand the Jedi tale,’ I thought. You don’t receive the ‘Star Wars’ magic. ‘You’re going to get rid of Han Solo?’ Luke is being disintegrated by them. They assassinated Han Solo. Luke Skywalker was assassinated. They also no longer have Princess Leia. Every year, they churn out new films. And they believe it’s essential to cater to a female audience, so their primary character is now a girl with Jedi abilities, but we have no idea how she acquired them or who she is. It’s a pain. The plots are horrendous. It’s really awful. Awful. ‘J.J. Abrams, Kathy Kennedy, speak to me,’ you may say.
Have you heard that? That’s the lovely, sweet sound of vindication. If anybody knows what Star Wars is meant to be, it’ll be the lady who has been there from the beginning of the tale. She was the first woman to win an Academy Award for editing the first Star Wars film, which was released in 1977. For the love of God, the lady who was married to the Star Wars creator for almost 15 years. She was there throughout it all. I don’t believe any of us anticipated her to say precisely what we’ve been screaming from the rooftops for years and then be humiliated, called names, and made fun of for it. But it’s here, and it’s fantastic!
I love how she encourages JJ and Kennedy to speak to her about it as well. Allow them to reach out and listen to what she has to say. To truly comprehend how they were able to drive a cherished franchise into the dirt in only four years. Will they make touch with her and listen to her? Doubtful. But congratulations to you, Marcia, for standing up for what you believe in. Thank you from all of us Star Wars fans who understand George Lucas’ vision for the franchise.
