So, what’s new?
For the most part, The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is the same product that many fans have known and loved for the last 10 years. The rules are the same, and almost all of the cards in the Revised Core Set are the same as well.
However, the Revised Core Set includes three kinds of cards that were not included in the initial release: campaign cards, boons, and burdens.
These three card types are all utilized in the Revised Core Set’s new campaign mode. In this mode, players may go through each of the core set’s scenarios in sequence, with the outcomes of each one influencing the conclusion of the next.
If you already possess the original LOTRCG, you’re in luck: these additional cards are completely free! On the Fantasy Flight website, all campaign cards, boons, and burdens will be freely accessible as print-and-play material.

The Card Game: The Lord of the Rings
The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is a cooperative Living Card Game set in the fantasy realm of Middle-earth for people who have never played it before. Players join Fellowships to embark on epic adventures, travel through hazardous places, and fight ferocious foes like Orcs, gigantic spiders, and the terrifying Nazgul.
Each player selects up to three characters and creates a deck of cards representing those heroes’ strengths, skills, tools, and friends. You’ll use ally and attachment cards to enhance your heroes, send your characters on missions, travel to different places, and defend against enemy assaults before unleashing your own attacks throughout each round. Meanwhile, you’ll need to keep your heroes healthy and keep an eye on your threat value, which reflects the Eye of Sauron’s power over you. Each round will gradually raise your threat value, until it hits 50 or all of your heroes are defeated, at which point you will be removed from the game!
Leadership, lore, spirit, and tactics are the four spheres of influence that each hero belongs to. Aragorn (Revised Core Set, 1) uses his Sentinel ability to protect friends or other heroes from hostile assaults, whereas other leadership heroes concentrate on skills that strengthen or defend other friendly characters. Lore heroes help players in a variety of ways, like as Beravor’s (Revised Core Set, 12) ability to let a player draw two cards. Spirit heroes excel at questing and confronting the encounter deck’s evil machinations head-on; whether or not players succeed on quests is decided by their characters’ willpower numbers, and Éowyn (Revised Core Set, 7) has a staggering 4 in this stat and the potential to raise it even higher. Finally, tactical heroes are all about battle, with abilities like Gimli’s (Revised Core Set, 4) ability to enhance his attack for each point of damage he has taken.
Each sphere of influence lends itself to a certain playstyle, and the greatest thing is that you are not restricted to using just one sphere when constructing your deck! You may mix and combine heroes from various spheres as much as you like to make your own unique deck; but, do so with caution. To play a card during the game, you must pay its resource cost. At the start of each round, your heroes produce resources, and each hero has their own resource pool. You can only use resources from heroes in the same sphere of influence to pay for a card’s cost, thus if you only have one hero in a given sphere, you can only use that hero’s resources to pay for that sphere’s cards. If Gimli is your sole tactics hero, for example, you can only use his resources to pay for the tactics cards in your deck; if your deck has a lot of tactics cards, you may want to consider adding a second tactics hero to your lineup.
The fundamental principles of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game stay the same in each game, despite the fact that each scenario plays out somewhat differently. Each round, you must choose which of your heroes and friends will participate in the mission, which is how the scenario is completed. The more characters you devote to the mission, the fewer you will have available to defend against enemy assaults. When an undefended hero is attacked, even lesser foes like the King Spider (Revised Core Set, 74) may do considerable damage, while strong monsters like the Hill Troll (Revised Core Set, 82) can wipe out an undefended hero in a single hit. To triumph over the powers of darkness, you must strike the proper balance between questing and battle.
