Jumanji is a game that’s old enough to be nostalgic, but new enough to feel like something you just discovered. It’s also the kind of game that doesn’t look at its past very much, instead focusing on what it wants its players to experience now and in the future. The video game adaptation of Jumanji is one worth playing for anyone who has ever enjoyed sitting down with friends or family every Christmas Eve night for an hour or two.
A new Jumanji video game has been released on the PlayStation 5. This is a remake of the 1995 movie which starred Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, and Will Smith. The plot follows four high school kids who are sucked into their favorite book where they have to go up against an evil board game in order for them to get out of it alive.

I was looking forward to Outright Games’ first push into the next generation of consoles, but I wasn’t expecting it to be an upgraded version of a two-year-old movie tie-in. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was released with the strange remake of the 1995 original, featuring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart, who were all locked in a video game rather than forced to play a borderline demonic version of Monopoly. In principle, the notion should have resulted in a successful video game adaption, however Jumanji: The Video Game was widely panned upon debut, receiving terrible reviews. Isn’t that the game we’ll be receiving on the PS5 soon? It’s an odd pick, but hey, maybe next-power gen’s may help with some of the game’s (many) flaws.
The level design’s intricacy is a sight to see.
I’m not here to debate the merits of that 2019 film because, to be honest, it’s not as bad as the prospect of a Jumanji revival starring The Rock and Jack Black suggests. The game itself, on the other hand, was a shoddy knockoff of your average third-person co-op shooter. It only has four stages, each with the same purpose of “escorting” a gem to a statue at the end of a straight route filled with traps, monsters, medals to collect, and obelisks to trigger in order to open a few gates. Not to mention the shoddy graphics, framerate, and sound.
Each of the four characters has one mediocre unique power and a few different attributes, but they don’t seem very distinct. You’ll generally play the same way with anyone you choose as your primary avatar, even if Jack Black is the priest and Kevin Hart is really more powerful than The Rock. Until the game instructs you to stop, it’s all about shooting and seeking for things to open doors. It’s a dull, unoriginal, and constrained gameplay cycle, only marginally eased by the fact that four-player co-op is available both online and offline.
Jumanji: Welcome to the PS5 version. You scarcely resemble the first Knack, which was published in 2013.
This PlayStation 5 version of Jumanji contains no new material. You’ll receive the same awful game as before, with marginally improved graphics and speed. Having said that, this is still one of the most lackluster next-gen games I’ve played since getting my PS5 a little over a year ago. You won’t be getting stunning images or a steady 60 frames per second framerate. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the game operate at a consistent framerate.
Characters are still animated in the manner of individuals attempting to execute the 1980s robot dance. For next-gen standards, loading times are rather lengthy. The PS5’s hardware just raised the game’s quality to where it should have been when it was initially released in 2019. At best, it used to be a terrible PS3-era game. At best, it’s now a lousy PS4-era title. Progress!
Not even the bare-bones graphics enhancements or the absence of DualSense functionality are the most disappointing aspects of this game. The sound design takes home the dreaded “prize.” Let me begin by mentioning that the music, at the very least, isn’t horrible. It’s basic, but it does the job. The issue here is with the voice acting. I understand that this game doesn’t have the biggest budget, so expecting Dwayne Johnson to turn up and record a few one-liners would have been insane… However, these knockoffs don’t sound anything like the originals! Karen Gillan’s replacement sounds like a random valley girl the dev team discovered at an Encino mall, for example.
Kevin Hart’s character in Jumanji is the only game in which he is a much better pick than Dwayne Johnson’s.
Remember when Michael Bluth remarked on Arrested Development, “I don’t know what I expected”? That’s me playing Jumanji: The Game on the PlayStation 5. Back when it initially came out, the game was beyond salvageable; trying it to look, sound, and play like a terrible last-gen game wasn’t going to work. It’s dull, simplistic, and repetitious, with a serious lack of substance. It may be fun on occasion, particularly with friends, but I’m quite sure there are at least seventy other co-op games I’d rather play before returning to Jumanji.
