Pecaminosa – A Pixel Noir Game was developed by Cereal Games and published by BadLand Publishing. It’s a crime-role-playing game set in a fictional 1940s boomtown where the mafia rules and gangsters roam the streets. Pecaminosa, released simultaneously on PC and Nintendo Switch, is a brilliant mix of action and RPG elements. There are even many more mechanics in the game, such as dual-stick play, open-world exploration and more, that make this great game even better. Here’s our review of the Nintendo Switch game Pecaminosa, in which we put on a detective hat and try to help the ghost of a dead gangster. The story of Pecaminosa revolves around Johnny Souza, a disgraced detective who lives his life in the most miserable condition. Pecaminosa is on the border between the United States and Mexico, and crime is rampant in its streets. His life goes on, but one night he is visited by a dead gangster, Charlie Two Angels, and his two dead thugs. He bribes you and asks you to find details about your partner to clear your head. While the first chapter serves as a tutorial to familiarize you with the various mechanics of the game and help you get weapons, the second chapter really picks up the pace and many things start to make sense around you. 
Pecaminosa is best played with a controller, as using the controller makes it a two-person shooter: You move with the left stick and aim and shoot with the right stick. Since this is a top-down game, you use the left stick to move around the map, while the right stick lets you aim and shoot. The controls are perfect for the Nintendo Switch. The learning curve is relatively small, but it will take some time to get used to the melee battles in the game. The game offers you a wide variety of weapons, but you’ll have to rely on your trusty fists early on in the game and engage in some close quarters combat before you get your weapon of choice. Melee combat is actually pretty fun when you get the hang of it. Blocking plays an important role in melee battles, and the game discourages spam attacks, which are key to winning melee battles. In my first fight, I discovered that if you constantly spam your attacks, the enemy does the same, and you die very quickly, because he doesn’t stop hitting like a robot. Blocking breaks the cycle of their shots and gives you a chance to throw a few shots before blocking again. 
The shooting mechanics are decent, but you’ll need to buy ammo and better weapons from a dealer in the game. Pecaminosa has an open world and you can walk around freely, meet different NPCs, visit different places and buy better things from different merchants in town. You can even use a taxi service to get around quickly, but the map is not too big and I think it is generally possible to get around on your own. In the game, you have to manage your money. So if you want to save money to buy better weapons and ammo, you’ll have to forgo fast travel and work on your legs. Pecaminosa is roleplaying by nature, and you will see many roleplaying mechanisms in action from the start of the game. There are four main attributes around which you can build your character, and depending on your choice, your character will benefit from different scenarios. These four traits are luck, intelligence, strength and endurance. If you prefer your character to have more health and hit hard, you can focus on Strength and Endurance. Similarly, if you prefer to be a pacifist, you can choose values like happiness and intelligence. 
However, due to the nature of the game, dialogue is not always an option that can be used, but in various scenarios, a higher level of intelligence can be beneficial, as you have additional negotiation skills at your disposal and can try to resolve certain situations without bloodshed. You can create your ideal detective in the game, based on the characteristics you prefer in your character. Stats aren’t just padding for the XP points you earn in the game, but if you focus on your favorite attributes, you’ll really get an idea of how your character improves in those specific skills throughout the game. In addition to awarding points to different attributes, you can also equip each lock with different clothing items that give different static enhancements. You can equip those where you prefer instead of the stats you want to improve for your character. With the points and clothes you get in the game, you can work on a physique that you really like. I didn’t expect the game to be so detailed when I started playing it, and as I progressed through the game, I really enjoyed it. The RPG mechanics are not overly heavy, but balanced enough to make the game really feel like an open world RPG. 
Since the story isn’t very long and only lasts a few hours, you won’t have the chance to make the most of every opportunity. So it makes sense to invest in the skills you really want to improve in the game and build your character around that. Overall the game looks good, the sound is excellent and there is enough action to keep you glued to the screen until you have completed all the chapters in the game. With three main and secondary chapters, you can expect to spend several hours in the game, but depending on your skill level, you may not find it to be a very long game. If you need a break from the main story, you can also play a quick game of blackjack from the main menu.

Pecaminosa combines decent combat with a simple RPG system where your choices determine which character you want to become. With a decent open world, Pecaminosa offers an immersive experience with an excellent soundtrack and challenging boss fights. Although the game isn’t overly long and the action can be boring at times, it’s still a fun game that can give you a few hours of enjoyment in the days when gangsters roamed the streets. This detective game with a pixelated noir world and a soothing jazzy soundtrack to accompany you is definitely worth your time if you like noir mafia video games with decent gameplay and a great open world.
