Unlike the original version, in which you could only choose from four characters, in the full edition you can choose from six characters at the start of the game, including the DLC characters from the original version, Knives Chow and Wallace Wells, as well as Scott, Ramona, Stephen Stills and Kim Pine. The beat ’em up gameplay at the heart of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World , is simple and familiar enough. You have the standard light and heavy attack keys. Enemies throw money which you can use to buy equipment to improve your stats, food to restore your health and experience points to level up. Equipment like the 101 Pushback book gives you a small permanent power increase so you can take out more enemies faster, and Winifred Haley’s plate increases your defense to reduce the amount of damage you take. Additionally, each character can level up, up to a maximum of level 16, by learning new techniques with each level. However, this level system seems unbalanced: some skills need to be learned or unlocked sooner than others. For example, the Air Recovery skill is not available until level 15. But if it was available earlier, it would be useful against enemies who can repeatedly throw you into the air. Ultimately, I liked this system because I felt like I was really progressing as I unlocked new attacks and skills, which ultimately led to more interesting combos, but it would be nice if they could expand it even further.

Some areas are overrun with a large number of enemies, and if you play alone, you can easily get knocked out. This is true even on the standard difficulty, and it becomes even more apparent when enemies stun you before launching devastating attacks. Not surprisingly, online multiplayer with friends is great fun – when it works. Up to four people can play online or offline in one session, making some parts of the game easier. I also had problems when an NPC appeared and the scene froze and didn’t continue. My friend who was in the same group as me said he didn’t see the NPC sprite appear at all! The 8-bit art style is also charming, but it sometimes feels low-resolution when deployed on the big screen – and some areas, such as .
