Grimm Eclipse is a neat mixture of a hack and slash game and a tower defense game, where you are defending your base from an onslaught of Grimm. The premise of the game is simple: you are Ruby, a student at Beacon Academy, and you have to hold off the Grimm long enough for your team to arrive and support you. There are also side missions you can accomplish to unlock new items and characters.

RWBY: Grimm Eclipse is a challenging, third-person, hack & slash action-RPG set in the fictional world of Remnant. It has simple mechanics and a fair amount of content but with few twists on the genre.

As the name suggests, RWBY: Grimm Eclipse is an adaptation of the Rooster Teeth anime RWBY. The game is a third-person action-RPG hack-and-slash, where the player controls a selectable character from a roster of RWBY characters (each with different playstyles), as they fight Grimm (creatures that are vaguely humanoid and somewhat resemble armored beowulfs). Controls are fairly standard for an action-RPG: movement is controlled with the left stick, the right stick aims, and the four face buttons are used to attack, block, use skills, and activate Grimm Shift.

I first heard about RWBY through the presence of several characters from the franchise in the Arc System Works game Blazblue : Cross Tag Battle. Given that these are anime characters in a hell of anime game developed by a Japanese developer, my first thought was that RWBY was an anime my 90s mind was unfamiliar with. You can’t imagine how shocked I was when I discovered that RWBY is an American web series hosted on the same site as the one known for the Halo parody, Red vs Blue. Oddly enough, I only discovered this a few days before the RWBY game was announced for the Switch. word-image-9676 Girl, that braid is just too much. RWBY: Grimm Eclipse Definitive Edition is not, as the title suggests, a new game in itself. The Grimm Eclipse game came out before the Switch’s release in January 2017. It’s a novel idea: a multi-player hack n’ slash game, with different characters to choose from, upgrades, co-op, etc. There aren’t many Devil May Cry games with multiplayer support, so that alone was enough to pique my interest. When I learned that the game has no complicated story (in fact, it has almost no story), I also felt less intimidated before venturing into a product based on a license I knew little about. Let’s just say RWBY has some good ideas: Grimm Eclipse Definitive Edition, which is hampered by some very annoying technical issues. I don’t think I need to address the biggest problem with RWBY: Grimm Eclipse Definitive Edition: Not many people are playing it on Switch, which means player selection is a messy affair. It’s rare that you can get the most out of the game with a group of four as cooperative hack n’ slash inspired by the Platinum games. There is little plot and very little explanation of where you are and what you are doing. From time to time, the teacher gives a few commands, which usually amount to killing all the monsters in the area or protecting a landmark by killing several waves of monsters. word-image-9677 The parry mechanisms in this game make no sense. You’ll probably spend most of your time alone. While the single player gameplay is good and offers a responsive combat system with a traditional light-heavy combat system, you can clearly see that it’s not balanced enough for one player to fight all those enemies at once. You can only upgrade your skills during a break in the game that doesn’t interrupt the action at all, meaning you’re standing still, like light bait, in the middle of the room. From a technical point of view, this Switch-port does an excellent job at a high level. Of course, the original RWBY: Grimm Eclipse was far from the most graphically intense game, given the emptiness of the environments and the particle effects in all versions. But given the even weaker material we’re dealing with, I expected much worse. Unfortunately, the sound department is a bit disappointing. While the game has a lot of voices, and good ones at that, the bland soundtrack leaves a lot to be desired. And finally, my biggest dissatisfaction with this game as a whole, even more than the poor player selection: The loading times are crazy long. This reminds me of the first batch of botched ports for the Switch that came out in 2017. word-image-9678 As Knack said: Ice cream is good. RWBY: Grimm Eclipse Definitive Edition falls into the same category as most of the average licensed games on the market: If you love the series, you’ll love this game too. If you know nothing about RWBY, you have to be a hardcore hack n’ slash fan to really enjoy it. It’s certainly not a bad game, but it’s just an innocent action game with little fan service, decent controls, and not enough people to fill the online lobby.

The game works well enough, and the characters are similar (to an extent) to their anime counterparts, but the environments, particle effects, lighting, and enemy design are not at their best. It’s far from the most balanced and successful hack n’ slash combat system in the world, but that’s made up for by making each character unique, with plenty of combos to pull off. The controls are also very responsive.
I was impressed with the quality of the voice acting, but the bland soundtrack leaves a lot to be desired. Poor player selection mechanics hamper what could have been an interesting hack n’ slash game option. It can be fun at times, but it suffers from balance issues and extremely long loading times.
Final decision: 6.5

As a huge fan of both RWBY and the game the Grimm Eclipse, the Grimm Eclipse Definitive Edition was a must-buy for me. The original game is a third-person action-RPG, with a combat system that is heavily inspired by God of War. In the original version, the game used the Unreal 4 engine, which had a lot of visual bugs on lower-end PCs. Luckily, the Grimm Eclipse Definitive Edition was ported to the Unity 5 engine, which fixes many of the original game’s performance issues..
